Youth football match formats explained: a complete overview

Written by Maud Vreman | published August 29, 2025

The KNVB (Royal Netherlands Football Association) now uses international age categories to refer to youth teams in the Netherlands. But anyone who has been involved in youth football for a longer time will surely remember the F, E and D teams. In addition to the adjustment of these names, the match formats in youth football have also been adjusted: smaller teams, smaller pitches and appropriate goals. This way, children touch the ball more often, develop their skills better and football remains attractive and educational.

Many clubs are therefore asking: which pitch layout and which goal belong to which age category? In this article, we will list all match formats clearly and show which portable goals are best suited.

Why the KNVB adjusted the match formats

When children still played on relatively large pitches, this proved to be less effective: they touched the ball less often and the game became too complex. That is why the KNVB has phased in adjusted match formats from 2017 onwards.

The most important principles:

  • Smaller teams and pitches: more ball contacts and actions per player.
  • Customized goals: suitable for children's height, strength and motor skills.
  • More fun: children continue to enjoy playing football for longer.

Match formats per age category

To ensure the game is as well-suited as possible to the age and development of players, the KNVB has determined fixed match formats for each team. This includes specific numbers of players, pitch dimensions, goal and football sizes. This creates a clear structure that helps clubs organize training sessions and matches.

In the overview and plan below, you will find all official match formats per age category, including the associated rules and materials. This makes it clear at a glance what is needed to allow each age group to play football optimally.

Why are portable goals indispensable for sports clubs?

If you look at the table and map above, you'll understand that flexibility on the sports park is of great importance. Field layouts are constantly changing: in the morning, the youngest youth teams play on small pitches, followed in the afternoon by matches for older youth or seniors. Thanks to portable goals, a club can easily adapt to these changing match formats and training sessions.

The benefits at a glance:

  • Efficient use of space: multiple fields can be set up simultaneously without fixed goals restricting the layout.
  • Easy organization: volunteers or coaches can quickly move the goals, which means less time is lost and training sessions run more smoothly.
  • Investment in the future: one set of portable goals can serve multiple age categories, making clubs more cost-efficient.
  • Safe and user-friendly: our goals are equipped with the correct anchoring and comply with KNVB standards, so players can train and play safely.

The right goal for every age category

Whether you want to set up a field for juniors, youth, or seniors: at SKOR, you will always find the right goal size. We supply all official sizes prescribed by the KNVB:

  • 3×1 m mini-goals for the youngest juniors (U7)
  • 5×2 m junior goals for U8 to U12
  • 7.32×2.44 m senior goals for U13 to seniors and girls' teams playing 9-a-side

In addition to this standard range, we also offer custom options that make using goals in practice much easier. Think of carrying handles and solid rubber wheels for easy moving of large goals. This allows coaches and volunteers to move the goals quickly and safely, without requiring much effort or multiple people. Preparing fields for training sessions or matches thus becomes much more efficient.

Furthermore, adjustments in color or finish are possible, so that the goals are not only functional but also contribute to a uniform and professional appearance of the sports park.

Ready for every match format

The KNVB match formats ensure that children and young people play football in a way that suits their age and development. For clubs, this means that different field layouts, goal sizes, and balls are needed to allow every team to play optimally.

With portable goals, your club can easily respond to this variation: from the smallest mini-players to seniors. At SKOR, you will find all official goal sizes and advice on making the right choices. This way, your club is always prepared, and all your teams can take to the field with pleasure and safety.
